How do I compare quotes for home adaptation work?
When you receive quotes for an accessible bathroom, level-access shower, ramp, stairlift, adapted kitchen or other home adaptation, compare more than the headline price. Check whether each company is pricing the same scope, whether VAT is clear, which products and materials are specified, how payment stages work, and what is included for finishing, waste removal, warranties and aftercare.
For Disabled Facilities Grant work in England, official delivery guidance says grant applications normally require at least two estimates, although councils have discretion in some circumstances. The council may also provide a specification or schedule of work that helps contractors quote for the same eligible works.
Quote or estimate?
A written quote is different from a rough estimate. Citizens Advice recommends getting written quotes and checking exactly what is included before agreeing to home improvement work.
Compare the same work
A lower price may reflect a different specification, product, finish or excluded task. Clarify differences before deciding whether one quote offers better value.
Check VAT and payments
Make sure VAT treatment and payment stages are clear, particularly where disability-related VAT relief or grant-funded work may affect the final figures.
